The Joy—and Envy—of Fiction

Written by Chauncey Haworth

We’re back with a fiction-packed issue!

I always feel good about myself when the issue is packed with fiction. There’s something noble about spreading fiction to me. But why? Is it because fiction is art? Is it because I think fiction is art?

We publish articles—are they not writers? Are they not creating their own version of art through research and prose? How about reviews? Reviews may not be art, but their place with us is an opportunity to discuss art—a very important aspect of art. How about the vamps? Are the photos and costumes and posing and scheduling not art? Are the vamps not a project of passion?

I think the easy answer is that writing fiction is what I want to do. But I think there’s a deeper answer. I think I want to write and am jealous of writers because of the mental focus it takes to write. I want that clarity, and not to be floundering with the tides of life all the time.

So what I’ve come to is this: I always feel good about myself when the issue is packed with fiction because it makes me jealous… at first. But afterward, it inspires me to put pencil to page and clampers to keyboard and write something.

Perhaps you’ll feel the same way after you read the mag.
